Dear Principal,

Subject: Ventilation in schools

The Education Authority (EA) is absolutely committed to working with the Department of Education (DE) and school leaders to ensure that there continues to be appropriate ventilation in schools, in line with the latest public health guidance and also advice from the Health and Safety Executive.

We know that schools continue to do everything they can to improve ventilation locally and, if there are spaces within the school where there are concerns about ventilation, schools should continue to call the EA Maintenance Helpdesk for your area, who will now provide CO2 monitors.

The findings from the CO2 monitors will determine whether remedial works will need to be undertaken in order to provide effective ventilation. Alternative measures may also need to be implemented in order to rectify the situation.

EA will also be undertaking a planned programme of window surveys to identify any minor works that may need to be carried out, including any steps to improve ventilation where appropriate. Surveys have commenced   and any immediate repairs identified to address ventilation concerns will be completed in the current financial year 21-22.

Once again, thank you for your continued co-operation and please don’t hesitate to contact our helpdesk if you have any queries or concerns.
