About this course
Every school should have a Safety Committee, and each union in the school should appoint a health and safety representative. Safety reps have real statutory powers, including the right to inspect the premises and investigate accidents, but those powers are only useful if you know how to use them.
This joint UTU, INTO and NEU course covers the legal framework and then puts it to work on the situations reps actually meet. Importantly, the safety rep is not legally responsible for hazards that are pointed out but not acted upon.
What the day covers
The Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978 and what it requires of employers
Appointment of safety representatives and the role of the school Safety Committee
Your right to inspect the premises and investigate hazards and accidents
Paid time off for safety reps and how it should appear on your timetable
Risk assessment: reading one, challenging one and knowing what is missing
Common school hazards including workload, stress, asbestos and lone working
Making effective representations to the employer and escalating a concern
Who should attend
Appointed health and safety representatives, joint safety reps in smaller schools, and school reps who also carry health and safety duties.
