UTU Update - November 2019

12th Nov 2019

NOVEMBER 2019

We hope you have settled back into work after the half-term break and wish you every success in the Christmas related events which define this part of the school year.

The Central Executive Committee will meet this Friday 15th November and we will keep you informed of any new information coming from that meeting.

In the meantime we hope you will find the following useful.

INDUSTRIAL ACTION

A reminder of our industrial action is attached (see below for download) and we wish to thank members for continuing to adhere to the action and keeping our negotiating position strong. The delay to the conclusion of this process is causing concern and it may be necessary to address this in the coming weeks. The matter is constantly under consideration both at CEC and NITC level and we will keep you updated with developments.

BRANCH MEETINGS

Branch meetings are underway and we would encourage you to avail of the invitation. Annual Conference will be taking place in the Slieve Donard Hotel in Newcastle on 26/27 March and it is required that you attend your Branch meeting in order to be nominated as a delegate. It is an ideal opportunity to have your voice heard and to share experiences with other teachers in your area. The Chairs of the Branches look forward to welcoming members, old and new!

SURVEY ON WORKPLACE HARASSMENT

The survey was issued last week and responses will close at the end of this week. The Northern Ireland data will be dealt with separately and the aim is to develop and improve means of addressing and reporting this issue to ensure everyone in the workplace is protected. There is particular concern about those in vulnerable positions, such as temporary or precarious employment, where there is a real fear of speaking out.

If you have been subjected to such behaviour, whether verbal or physical, and whether from colleagues or pupils, your experience is important to shape the way forward for others. The survey ensures anonymity and we would encourage you to respond.

EMPLOYMENT CONTRACTS

We are aware that many issues are arising regarding the contracts of those members seeking permanency and those who are impacted by the changes within EA; indeed, many of you have been in contact for support. Our Officials continue to work hard to address these issues and we are seeing signs of movement. Please get in contact if you have been experiencing problems in this area.

Kind regards

Jacquie White

General Secretary
