PREMATURE RETIREMENT At a meeting of the Joint Working Party on Tuesday 11 th December it was finally confirmed by the employing authorities that the Department of Education had advised them that the Teachers' Superannuation Scheme could no longer subsidise the cost of added years. ANY TEACHER CONSIDERING PREMATURE RETIRMENT THIS YEAR SHOULD NOTE THAT IT IS LIKELY THAT THEY WILL NOT BE OFFERED ENHANCEMENT BUT MAY STILL RECEIVE PAYMENT OF UNREDUCED PENSION STRAIGHT AWAY. TEACHERS' PENSIONS The Department of Education went ahead with the proposed changes to teachers' pensions from 1 st April 2007. <details Several details of the outworking of the scheme will need to be carefully monitored and UTU awaits further details of the scheme particularly in regards to a proposed 'Winding Down Scheme.'All teachers may now retire from teaching either (a) from ages 55 to 59 but there will be a reduction in pension/lump sum or (b) having reached age 60 with full pension/lump sum based on pensionable service. <more

TEACHERS' NEGOTIATING COMMITTEE The Ulster Teachers' Union along with ATL, INTO & NAHT successfully concluded negotiations on the following procedures at the TNC meeting of Wednesday 5 th December: •  Managing Attendance •  Threshold •  Maternity Scheme •  Disciplinary Procedure •  PRSD •  Collective AgreementWork had been ongoing for some time ensuring that all these procedures were updated in line with current legislation. <more

RESPONSE OF THE ULSTER TEACHERS’ UNION TO “EVERY SCHOOL A GOOD SCHOOL” A further concern for UTU would be the damaging effect on morale of those teachers who are performing well but whose school, for whatever reason, achieves a low grade in the inspection process. The UTU also has concerns about the impact on teachers’ health and wellbeing, particularly the in relation to the workload issues that are an almost inevitable consequence of the implementation of this policy. <more
